A Sweet History

Our Story

The Dansville Granola Company was started by Mary Alioto after initially crafting her granola for the apple orchard and farm store she and her husband owned for 25 years in Maine. When they retired from the orchard and moved to the Finger Lakes Region, she knew she wanted to bring the granola business with her. Moving to Dansville, the birthplace of granola, felt like coming full circle.

Mary began making her original small-batch Dansville Granola Company granola in January, 2021 in a leased commercial kitchen. In December 2022, the operation moved into its own commercial kitchen and retail store in a historic building right on Main Street of Dansville, New York.

Made with only the best ingredients and locally sourced maple syrup, our granola is a healthy addition to daily life. Whether a local friend or shopping from afar online, we hope you enjoy our delicious granola.

Dansville Granola our story

Made in Dansville, New York, the birthplace of granola.

Dr. James Jackson - inventor of granula
Invention of Granula - historic tin

Granula was invented in 1863 by Dr. James Caleb Jackson at the Jackson Sanitarium, a prominent health spa on the hillside overlooking Dansville. It was also known as Our Home on the Hillside; thus the company formed to sell Jackson's cereal was known as the Our Home Granula Company.

Originally created as a breakfast cereal, granola experienced a revival in the 1960s when fruits and nuts were added, transforming it into the wholesome snack we know today. Its popularity among the health-conscious, back-to-nature movement of the era helped inspire the term "crunchy granola," a nickname that has endured ever since.
